A practical checklist for choosing a dental clinic in Turkey. Seven questions that separate safe clinics from risky ones, red flags to watch for, and how to verify credentials independently.
Every article on page one for how to choose a dental clinic in Turkey recommends the clinic that wrote it. Ours included -- we'll tell you about BestDent at the end. But first, here's a framework you can use to evaluate any clinic, including ours. Seven questions, emailed to any clinic you're considering, that separate safe operations from risky ones.
If you've already decided on dental tourism in Turkey, this is how you find a good dentist without getting it wrong.
Copy these questions. Email them to every clinic on your shortlist. The answers -- and how quickly they respond -- tell you more than any marketing page.
Why it matters: JCI (Joint Commission International) is the gold standard for international healthcare quality. It covers patient safety, infection control, staff qualifications, and facility standards. ISO 9001 confirms structured quality management processes.
Good answer: The clinic sends a certificate number or screenshot within 24 hours, or links directly to their listing in the JCI directory.
Red flag: "We follow international standards" or "We're working towards accreditation." Vague language here almost always means they don't have it.
Why it matters: Premium brands like Straumann (Swiss) and Nobel Biocare (Swedish) have decades of published clinical data and long-term survival rates. When a clinic uses dental implants from established manufacturers, you know the materials have been tested in hundreds of thousands of patients.
Good answer: Specific brand names -- "We use Straumann BLX for implants and Ivoclar E-max for crowns." Willingness to show brand packaging or a manufacturer certificate.
Red flag: "We use the best materials" without naming a single brand. If they won't tell you the brand, ask yourself why.
Why it matters: A written plan prevents surprise procedures, unexpected costs, and scope creep once you arrive. You should know exactly what's happening, what materials are used, and how many visits are required before you book a flight.
Good answer: "Yes. Send us your panoramic X-ray and we'll provide an itemised treatment plan within 48 hours -- procedures, materials, timeline, and what's included."
Red flag: "We'll assess everything when you arrive." This leaves you no control and no baseline to compare against.
Why it matters: Aftercare is the number one concern for dental tourists. A clinic's answer to this question reveals whether they think beyond the treatment chair.
Good answer: "We offer 24/7 English-language support via WhatsApp. We coordinate with your UK dentist by sending treatment records and X-rays. Our warranty covers revisions."
Red flag: "You can come back if there's a problem" with no specifics on remote support, timelines, or who pays for travel.
Why it matters: An in-house digital lab means faster turnaround (same-day impressions, quicker fabrication), better quality control, and easier adjustments if the fit isn't perfect. Outsourced lab work adds days to treatment and makes real-time adjustments harder.
Good answer: "Our lab is on-site. We use CAD/CAM digital milling for crowns and bridges."
Red flag: Lab work outsourced to an unknown third party with no quality control visibility.
Why it matters: A written warranty shows the clinic stands behind its work. No warranty means no accountability if something fails.
Good answer: Specific terms -- "5-year warranty on implants, 3-year warranty on crowns and bridges, covering material defects and structural failure." Written policy available.
Red flag: No written guarantee. Or a "lifetime guarantee" with no written terms -- if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Why it matters: Hidden costs are the most common dental tourism complaint. The price you're quoted should include everything you need -- not just the procedure itself.
Good answer: An itemised breakdown: consultation, panoramic X-ray, CBCT scan, procedure, temporary restoration, follow-up appointments, airport transfer, hotel coordination. Clear about what's extra (if anything).
Red flag: "All-inclusive" with no specifics. Or a low headline price that excludes X-rays, anaesthesia, temporary work, or follow-up visits.
| Question | Good Answer | Red Flag |
|---|
| JCI/ISO accreditation? | Certificate sent within 24 hours | "Working towards accreditation" |
| Which brands? | Named brands with certificates | "We use the best materials" |
| Written treatment plan? | Itemised plan before travel | "We'll assess on arrival" |
| Complication support? | 24/7 remote support + UK dentist coordination | "Come back if there's a problem" |
| In-house lab? | On-site with digital milling | Outsourced to unknown third party |
| Written warranty? | 3-5 year terms, written policy | No warranty or vague "lifetime" |
| What's included? | Itemised cost breakdown | "All-inclusive" with no details |
If a clinic answers all seven confidently, with specifics, within a reasonable timeframe -- you're likely dealing with a professional operation. If they dodge more than two, keep looking.

Don't take any clinic's word for it -- including ours. Here's how to verify independently in about ten minutes.
Step 1: Check JCI accreditation. Go to jointcommissioninternational.org, click "JCI-Accredited Organizations," filter by Turkey, and search for the clinic name. If it's listed, the accreditation is current.
Step 2: Check the Turkish Ministry of Health registry. Visit the Ministry of Health International Health Tourism database. Search for the clinic. This confirms they hold the mandatory International Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate.
Step 3: Cross-reference reviews. Check Google Reviews, Trustpilot, and WhatClinic for the same clinic. Look for:
- Reviews from patients in your country (UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany)
- Specific procedure details (not just "great service!")
- Photos or detailed descriptions of the experience
- A spread of ratings, not just perfect scores
Step 4: Spot fake reviews. Be suspicious of:
- A cluster of 5-star reviews posted on the same day or week
- Reviews with identical phrasing or writing style
- No procedure-specific details (generic praise only)
- Celebrity endorsements or influencer partnerships as the primary credibility signal
Step 5: Request qualifications directly. Ask the clinic to send the treating dentist's university degree, specialist certificates, and professional memberships. Reputable clinics provide these without hesitation.
These are specific tactics that budget clinics use. If you encounter any of them, move on.
- Pressure to book immediately -- "This price is only available today" or "We only have two spots left this month." Reputable clinics don't create artificial urgency.
- No named implant or material brands -- if they won't tell you what they're putting in your mouth, the materials are likely unbranded or low-quality.
- No written treatment plan before travel -- you should never fly to another country without knowing exactly what's planned.
- Clinic refuses to send credentials -- JCI certificates, ISO certificates, dentist qualifications. If they have them, they'll share them.
- Prices dramatically below market -- if a clinic charges 40-50% less than other reputable Turkish clinics, they're cutting corners somewhere. The savings from Turkey come from lower operating costs, not from cheaper materials.
- No aftercare plan -- "Come back if there's a problem" isn't a plan. Look for 24/7 support, remote monitoring, and UK dentist coordination.
- All reviews are 5 stars with no specifics -- real patients leave detailed reviews. A wall of generic praise is manufactured.
- Aggressive treatment recommendations -- a clinic pushing full veneers or a Hollywood smile without exploring conservative alternatives is prioritising revenue over your dental health.
- No in-house lab -- outsourced lab work means less quality control and longer treatment times.
You have two routes to a clinic in Turkey: book directly, or use a medical tourism facilitator who arranges everything. Both have trade-offs.
| Factor | Direct Booking | Facilitator |
|---|
| Cost transparency | Full visibility into clinic pricing | Facilitator markup may be hidden |
| Clinic choice | You choose based on your research | Facilitator may steer toward partner clinics |
| Logistics support | Handled by the clinic (if they offer it) | Fully arranged by facilitator |
| Communication | Direct with your treating dentist | Through a middleman |
| Accountability | Clear: the clinic is responsible | Split between facilitator and clinic |
Our honest recommendation: direct booking is usually better if the clinic handles logistics (airport transfers, hotel coordination, appointment scheduling) themselves. You get a direct relationship with your treating dentist, full cost transparency, and clear accountability.
A facilitator can make sense if you're nervous about planning independently, or if the clinic you've chosen doesn't offer logistical support. Just be aware that facilitators earn commissions, which can influence which clinic they recommend.
Two cities dominate Turkish dental tourism. Here's how they compare in practical terms.
| Factor | Istanbul | Antalya |
|---|
| Number of dental clinics | Largest selection in Turkey | Growing but fewer options |
| Airport connections | Direct flights from most UK/EU cities | Mostly seasonal and charter flights |
| Clinic concentration | Dense -- many within city centre | Spread across a larger area |
| Tourism options | World-class culture, dining, history | Beach resort atmosphere |
| Typical transfer time | 30-60 minutes from airport to clinic | 20-40 minutes from airport |
The honest answer: clinic quality matters far more than city. Don't choose Antalya over Istanbul (or vice versa) because of the weather. Choose the best clinic for your procedure, regardless of which city it's in. That said, Istanbul has more direct UK flights and a larger concentration of JCI-accredited facilities.
We wrote this checklist. Here's how we answer each question ourselves.
